RENTON – Lemuel Jeanpierre is back with the Seahawks. Again.
In need of help at center with an injury to Patrick Lewis – not to mention inconsistent play from both he and Drew Nowak – the Seahawks have brought back Jeanpierre for his third stint with the team.
That was among four roster moves Seattle made Tuesday. Fullback Derrick Coleman was officially reinstated from his suspension, as expected. The team waived cornerback Crezdon Butler and placed linebacker Brock Coyle on the Injured Reserve/Designated for Return list.
Jeanpierre started 11 games over four seasons with Seattle and was part of the offseason competition to replace Max Unger as the team’s starting center until he was released in August during the first wave of roster cut-downs.
Lewis started at center over Nowak for the first time this season Sunday against Carolina but injured his knee and ankle. Coach Pete Carroll was unsure about Lewis’ status for Thursday night’s game against San Francisco, saying Monday that Seattle was awaiting the results of MRIs that Lewis had on those injuries earlier that afternoon.
Unknown at this point is a) how long Lewis’ injuries will sideline him; b) whether Seattle views Jeanpierre as the better option over Nowak and/or a healthy Lewis; and c) whether Jeanpierre can play Thursday after re-joining the team only two days earlier.
Carroll also revealed on Monday the team’s plans to reinstate Coleman, who was suspended indefinitely by the team last week after his arrest on suspicion of felony vehicular assault and hit and run. It’s not clear whether Coleman will be available for Thursday night’s game as Carroll Monday that he first needs to be cleared medically by team doctors, who weren’t able to examine him while he was suspended.
Coyle, a backup middle linebacker and special-teams player, missed Sunday’s game with a knee injury. Per rules of short-term IR, he can’t practice for six weeks and can’t play for at least eight weeks, making him eligible to return in Week 15 against Cleveland at the earliest. Teams are allowed to use the short-term IR designation once per season.
Butler was signed last week to reinforce Seattle’s cornerback depth while three backups were injured. One of those backups, Tye Smith, is returning this week while another, Marcus Burley, is expected to do so next week.
